Recently, our Physical and Occupational Therapy Department received the Outcomes Excellence Award from Focus On Therapy Outcomes (FOTO®). This award recognizes the department for exceeding the national average for functional change in FOTO®’s database for four consecutive quarters.
“Here at Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital, our goal is to provide our patients the best possible outcome in the shortest time. We’re proud of our staff for achieving this milestone,” said Doug Page, P.T., O.C.S, Therapy Services Manager. “It’s essential that we measure the speed of recovery and effectiveness of our treatments, in order to provide the best care to our patients, and being recognized for that care is something to be celebrated.”
The Physical and Occupational Therapy Department uses FOTO® to analyze patient outcomes. FOTO® is the largest and most valid external database for rehabilitation, measuring functional outcomes for patients with multiple diagnoses. During care at our facility, our patients typically complete a series of health status questionnaires throughout the course of their treatment. This data is compared to national benchmarks, and provides our therapists with risk-adjusted national assessments of treatment effectiveness and our patients’ ability to do everyday activities. These FOTO® evaluations provide us with information regarding how our patients are doing compared with other patients as well as our therapists’ success rates.
The FOTO® web-based program utilizes sophisticated computer adaptive testing to provide efficient, specific measures of body part functionality. This program is used nationwide with nearly 2,000 clinics and has a database of more than 5 million completed surveys. By measuring our performance against providers all over the country, we can identify our strengths and improve on any areas requiring focus.
The Physical and Occupational Therapy Department at Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital has exceeded the national average for predicted outcomes and utilization of therapy services since implementing the partnership with FOTO® in late 2013.
